Bangladesh Sadharon Chhatra Adhikar Sankrakkhan Parishad leaders and activists stage demonstration in Shahbag intersection demanding reform in existing quota system in public services.

The proposals recommended by the government committee on quota reform may be presented in a cabinet meeting on Wednesday.

Whether the existing quota system will be reformed or not might be decided in the meeting, several government officials have confirmed to the media.

The committee headed by the cabinet secretary on 17 September submitted a report to the prime minister recommending abolition of the quota system from 9th to 13th grade of government services.

The committee recommended recruiting officers to these posts on the basis of merit.

The students demanding reforms in the quota system, however, said they never sought complete removal of quota.

All they wanted was the gazette to reform the existing quota system, they told newsmen.

Several organisations of freedom fighters’ children and of small ethnic groups, on the other hand, have been protesting to keep the existing quota system for public services.

The committee made detailed review before submitting the final report, according to government officials.

They reviewed the data of previous 10 BCS exams. They found that as many as 12.99 per cent candidates in freedom fighters quota, 9.44 per cent in women quota and 1.17 per cent candidates in ethnic quota were recommended for recruitment at the time.
