Road transport and bridges minister Obaidul Quader on Thursday said prime minister Sheikh Hasina has turned down a proposal to name the much-hyped Padma bridge after her name, reports UNB.

He came up with the information while talking to reporters after visiting minor boy Likhon, who has been suffering from a rare disease, at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).

The road transport and bridges ministry earlier sent the proposal to the prime minister to name the bridge 'Sheikh Hasina Padma Bridge' but she rejected it, said Quader.

He said it is the prime minister who took on the challenge to construct the Padma bridge with own fund without taking money from the World Bank. "So, people of all walks of life were demanding that the bridge be named after her name," he said.

The minister said Sheikh Hasina does not want the bridge to be named after any member of the Bangabandhu family and she has decided to name the bridge after the river.

Earlier on 29 September, he said the Padma bridge will be named after prime minister Sheikh Hasina.

Meanwhile, Quader, also Awami League general secretary, took the responsibility for the treatment of the ailing boy.
