The High Court on Tuesday stayed the election commission's letter cancelling the registration of Oikyaboddha Nagorik Andolon, a political party led by Kazi Faruk Ahmed, reports UNB.

The HC also issued a rule seeking explanation as to why the decision of cancelling registration of Oikyaboddha Nagorik Andolon should not be declared illegal.

A bench of justice Sheikh Hassan Arif and justice Razik-Al-Jalil passed the order after hearing a writ petition filed by Oikyaboddha Nagorik Andolon president Kazi Faruk and general secretary Abdus Samad.

Advocate Manzill Murshid stood for the petitioner while deputy attorney general Mokhlesur Rahman stood for the state.

Oikyaboddha Nagorik Andolon secured registration from the EC on 16 November 2008.

On 4 October this year, the EC cancelled the registration of the party.

The party's registration cancellation was stayed until the rule issued by the HC is disposed of, said Manzill Murshid.
