A man was killed in an alleged gunfight with the members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in Rajapur area of Pabna sadar upazila early Saturday, reports UNB.

Deceased Tipu Sheikh, 45, son of a certain Asar Uddin, a resident of Kabirpur village of the upazila was accused in eight drug cases, the law enforcement said.

According to Ain o Salish Kendra, a national legal aid and human rights organisation, 334 people were killed in “crossfires” and “shootouts” with law enforcement agencies between January and August this year.

Acting on tip off a team of RAB conducted a raid in an abandoned building of a cotton mill around 3:30am, said RAB-12 commanding officer Ruhul Amin.

Sensing the presence of the RAB team, the gang members opened fire on them, forcing the law enforcement to fire back, triggering the gun fight, he said.

After the drug traders fled the scene, the RAB team found Tipu with gunshot wound, Ruhul Amin said.

He was rushed to sadar hospital where physicians declared him dead.

Two RAB members were also injured in the incident, he added.

Police recovered a foreign revolver, five rounds of bullet and 770 pieces yaba tablets from the spot.

Prothom Alo could not verify the RAB’s version of the incident independently as no version of it was available immediately either from any witness or from any member of the victim’s family.
