A man was killed in what the law enforcement called a gunfight in Tongabari of Ashulia, Savar early Monday.

The deceased was Shamim Hossain, 55, son of late Abul Khayer, from Jashore.

News agency UNB quoted police as saying that Shamim used to commit robbery on Dhaka-Aricha highway and was accused in several robbery cases filed with Dhamari police station.

A team of police arrested Shamim from highway on Sunday. Later, they conducted a drive to arrest members of his gang early in the morning, said Dipak Chandra Saha, officer-in-charge of Dhamrai police station.

When the team reached the area, Shamim's cohorts opened fire on police, forcing them to fire back that triggered the gunfight, leaving him bullet injured.

The injured was taken to Savar upazila health complex where the physicians declared him dead, said the OC.

Prothom Alo, however, could not verify the law enforcement’s version of the incident independently as no version of it was available immediately either from any witness or from any member of the victim’s family.
