BCL assaults journalist, cultural activists at RU

The Bangladesh Chhatra League men beat up a journalist and six cultural activists of different groups of Rajshahi University for protesting the screening of a Kolkata-Bangla film 'Dahan' at campus auditorium on Saturday, reports UNB.

The injured are Rajshahi University Journalist Association general secretary Ali Yunus Hridoy, Pragatisheel Chhatra Jote coordinator Mahabbat Hossain Milion, Chhatra Union president Shakil Hossain, its publicity secretary Mithun Chandra Hemanta, Chhatra Federation's publicity secretary Israfil, activist Rashed Rimon and Arshaful Alam.

Witness said the cultural leaders and activists took their position in front of the Kazi Nazrul Islam Auditorium to stop screening of the cinema produced by JAAZ Multimedia as it could create anarchy in the campus.

They made discussion with the university proctor in this regard but failed to reach a solution.

At one stage, they requested the viewers not to enter the auditorium. Following the incident, some BCL leaders and activists attack and beat them up, leaving Mithun Chandra Hemanta's hand broken, they added.

RU proctor professor Lutfor Rahman said, "I went to make them understand but they did not listen to me."

BCL’s RU unit general secretary Faisal Ahmed Runu said they visited the spot and found the cultural leaders assault the proctor.

JAAZ Multimedia rented the university auditorium for displaying the cinema as the city's cinema hall 'Upohar' closed since 11 October.
