The motorcade of opposition coalition Jatiya Oikya Front convenor Kamal Hossain was allegedly attacked by the supporters of an MP of ruling Bangladesh Awami League in Mirpur of the capital on Friday.

The alleged attack was carried out while Kamal Hossain, also Gano Forum president, was returning from Martyred Intellectuals Memorial after paying tributes to the intellectuals who were killed on 14 December 1971.

“Awami League candidate Aslamul Haque’s supporters attacked the Oikya Front leaders’ motorcade when they were coming out of the memorial. Several cars including that of Gano Forum leader Jaglul Haider, were vandalised,” said Oikya Front media wing official Latiful Bari Hamim.

Several other Oikya Front leaders including JSD leader ASM Abdur Rab, Reza Kibria, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader Abdus Salam and Gonoshasthaya Kendra trustee Zafrullah Chowdhury were also with Kamal Hossain.

“The driver of Abdur Rab’s car was injured in the attack carried out around 9:00am,” he added.

A number of witnesses said that Kamal Hossain’s car was parked near the main gate of memorial. Miscreants shattered the window shield at the moment he was about to get into the car.

Passers-by and a number of TV journalists were beaten up by the attackers, the witnesses added.

Hamim said Kamal Hossain will brief the newsmen about the attack at Oikya Front’s temporary office at Purana Paltan’s Zaman Tower around 3:00pm today (Friday).
