The election commission (EC) on Friday said it does not know about the attack on Jatiya Oikya Front leader Kamal Hossain's motorcade in the city.

"We're not informed about the attack on Kamal Hossain. None has so far complained with the commission regarding the matter,” said EC secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed while answering queries from newsmen at a briefing at Nirbachan Bhaban on Friday.

Kamal Hossain's motorcade came under attack allegedly by ruling party activists near the Martyred Intellectuals Memorial at Mirpur while returning after paying tributes to the martyred intellectuals, leaving at least 10 people injured, reports UNB.

Kamal, however, managed to escape the attack unhurt.

At a press conference on Friday, Kamal Hossain described the attack as a serious act of disrespect to martyred intellectuals.

In the wake of repeated attacks on the opposition leaders and activists, election commission secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed said that they have ordered the police not to harass ‘senior leaders’ of principal opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party.

About BNP’s allegation of mass arrest of the party’s leaders and activists, Helal Uddin said there were arrest warrants against many of them.

“Police couldn’t arrest them in the past as they were fugitive. Now the police are arresting the warranted ones as they are coming out due to elections,” he said.

The EC secretary also said the army would be deployed for 10 days to maintain law and order situation.

The armed forces would assist civil administration, Helal Uddin added.
