53 BNP men sued, 15 arrested

A total of 53 leaders and activists of the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) were sued while 15 of them arrested in Bogura, Munshiganj and Khulna districts on Tuesday, reports news agency UNB.

In Bogura, a case was filed against 34 BNP members, including Shibganj upazila unit convener and 15 unnamed people, on charge of attacking the convoy of Awami League candidate of Bogura-2 constituency Shariful Islam Jinnah during electioneering.

Sanaullah Sana, joint convener of the upazila’s Juba Sanghati unit, filed the case for the attack that was launched in Bhaiyerpukur area of the upazila around 9:30pm on Monday night.

In Munshiganj, another 19 BNP members were sued on allegation of torching an election camp of the ruling Bangladesh Awami League in Palgaon in Lohajang upazila.

Juba League president Md Alamgir Kabir filed the case accusing 19 BNP men and 7-8 unnamed people.

Officer-in-charge of Lohajang police station also arrested three BNP men in this regard.

In Khulna, BNP candidate of Khulna-3 constituency Rokibul Islam Bakul alleged that police detained 12 BNP men on Tuesday without filing any case.

He also submitted a memorandum to the returning officer seeking remedy of the matter.

He said activists of the Awami League and Chhatra League, ruling party’s student unit, persistently attacking and threatening the BNP supporters but police have been arresting local leaders of the BNP lodging fake cases.

Besides, police arrested 12 leaders of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami during raids in different areas in Barishal.

The law enforcement also seized books on militancy and leaflets from their procession.
