There were no irregularities in the 11th parliamentary elections held on Sunday, chief election commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda has said.

"We are happy with the turn out. And certainly not ashamed," he said while speaking to journalists at the post-election briefing at the election commission office on Monday afternoon.

"The voter turn out was extraordinary. The voters thronged the polling centres in great numbers to elect a new government. It was an occasion to celebrate, as we had seen in the local and international media."

"There have only been a few untoward incidents. But we feel sorry for the loss of 13 lives," said the CEC.

"As many as 80 percent votes were casted. We thank the law enforcement, consisting of police, RAB, the army, the BGB, and other forces, for helping us holding it in a free and fair manner," he added.

When asked how come a party's candidate gets 400,000 votes and his opponent 400, the CEC said, "That is how the people casted their votes. The media reported no anomalies."

"We hope the government will take us forward," he further said.
