2 killed in 'gunfight' with police

Prothom Alo IllustrationTwo persons were killed in what police called a gunfight in Shariatpur early Tuesday.

According to UNB, the deceased were Russell and Jahangir.

The news agency quoted police as saying when a gang of robbers was taking preparation for committing a robbery, a team of police conducted a drive in Dehobhog of Sadar upazila.

Sensing the presence of police, the robbers opened fire on the law enforcers, prompting them to fire back, triggering the gunfight, leaving the duo injured with bullet, claim police.

The injured were taken to Sadar Upazila Health Complex where the physicians declared them dead. Three policemen were also injured in the incident, according to the police version of the incident.

Prothom Alo, however, could not verify the law enforcement’s version of the incident independently as no version of it was available immediately either from any witness or from any member of the victim’s family.
