Bakhtiar Alam Rony, the son of former Awami League parliamentarian Pinu Khan, was found guilty of murders and sentenced to life imprisonment by a Dhaka court on Wednesday, reports UNB.

He was also fined Tk 50,000 by Dhaka additional metropolitan sessions judge-2 Manjurul Imam. Rony will have to stay in jail for six months more if he fails to pay the fine.

The court said it sentenced Rony to life imprisonment taking into consideration his psychological and physical conditions at the time of the incident.

Rony fired indiscriminately on people near Janakantha Bhaban in New Eskaton from his car on 13 April 2015, injuring rickshaw-puller Abdul Hakim and Janakantha's auto-rickshaw driver Yakub.

Hakim died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital two days later while Yakub died from his injuries at the hospital on 23 April.

A case was filed with Ramna police station against unidentified people on 15 April. On 1 June Rony was arrested from his Dhanmondi residence.

The court was initially scheduled to deliver the verdict on 8 May last year. It was deferred as judge Md Al Mamun said he could not prepare the judgment. The court pushed back the verdict date again on 4 October after the prosecution filed a petition to summon the investigation officer for rehearing.

Hearing of the arguments was wrapped up on 15 January. Then, the court announced to deliver the verdict on 30 January.
