2 cops sentenced to death for killing college girls after rape

A Kishoreganj tribunal sentenced two police constables to death for killing two college girls after rape in a hotel in Dhaka in 2008.

The convicts are constables Maniruzzaman alias Halud Mia alias Sujon, 32, and Shamim Hawlader alias Zahir, 38, both were attached to the District Police Lines.

Judge Kiron Shankar Haldar of Kishoreganj Women and Children Repression Prevention tribunal also sentenced six other people to four years jail each.

According to the prosecution, police constables Maniruzzaman and Shamim developed love affair with two girls Afroza Akhter Soma and her friend Afroza Akhter Urmi, both first year student of Kishoreganj Girls' College, over phone.

On 21 September, 2008, the culprits brought the girls to the Western Hotel in Dhaka's Karwan Bazar with the promise of marriage. Later, the convicts raped the girls there and dumped their bodies.

Later, police recovered the bodies and Soma's father Abu Bakar Siddique filed a case.

DB police inspector Amzad Hossain submitted a charge sheet accusing eight people.
