Elderly man killed for protesting against loud noise

An elderly man was beaten to death as he asked his neighbour to reduce the volume of music being played in Maruhar village of Mogor union, Jhalakathi, at around 12:00am on Friday.

The deceased, Jalil Hawladar, 60, was a Saudi expatriate who returned to the country last year.

The deceased’s family claimed that the son of Mogor union parishad chairman Muin Khan Bappy, 35, along with his friends broke into Jalil’s house and beat him to death.

According to police and local people, Muin arranged a five-day picnic with his friends. They were at a loggerheads with the local people as the music and noise on loudspeaker was creating disturbing prayers. Jalil Hawladar asked Muin and others to turn down the volume at around 10:00pm on Friday.

Following the scuffle, Muin and his friends attacked Jalil, resulting in his death.

The dead body will be sent to Jhalakathi Sadar hospital morgue for autopsy and action will be taken accordingly, said the officer-in-charge of Nalchity police station.
