Student threatens to commit suicide after release from jail

He will commit suicide along with his mother and younger sister as soon as he is released from jail. A Jagannath University student, Ehsan Habib, who was arrested from the university for no apparent reason wrote this open letter from jail. The letter has gone viral on social media.

Ehsan claimed that the police framed him in a case concerning the infighting of the university unit of Chhatra League.

“I will go home from the jail. Then my mother, my disabled sister and I will commit suicide,” he wrote in the letter.

Ehsan was the only earning member of his family. He is from Narail. He was arrested from the university campus on 19 February. Habib wrote about his arrest in the letter.

The letter said he went to park his motorcycle at the parking lot of the university's new building at around 8:00pm. His roommate Shovon was with him at the time. An assistant proctor suddenly appeared and a police team arrested Ehsan with no explanation.

He later came at the police station that some miscreants had tord down the posters of the abolished committee of the university BCL unit ahead of the election for the new committee. Police arrested him in connection with the incident. Notably, the former committee was abolished following clashes on 18 February.
Ehsan wrote in the letter that he told the police several times that he was not involved in politics. The officer in charge of Kotwali police station assured him that he would be released if innocent but sent him to court the next day.

Ehsan urged the vice chancellor and proctor of the university to verify whether the accused is guilty or a scapegoat.
The university authorities took the matter seriously as the letter went viral on social media.

They assured that they will take steps for Ehsan’s bail.
The officer in charge of Kotwali police station, Moudud Hawladar told Prothom Alo that he was investigating on every detail and evidence related to the matter.
“Only those against whom there is adequate proof will be named in the charge sheet,” he added.

The proctor of Jagannath University said, the university authorities will take necessary steps to free Ehsan on Sunday.
“He will be acquitted if proved not to be involved in politics,” proctor Noor Mohammad added.
