The High Court on Tuesday asked Green Line Paribahan to pay Tk 5 million as compensation to Russel Sarkar, who lost his leg in an accident in the city's Dholaipar on 28 April, last year, within two weeks, reports UNB.

The HC bench of justice FRM Nazmul Ahasan and justice KM Kamrul Kader passed the order following a writ petition.

Lawyer Khandaker Shamsul Haq Reza stood for the petitioner while Mohammad Ajiullah stood for Green Line Paribahan and deputy attorney general Abdullah al Mahmud Bashar represented the state.

The court also fixed 31 March for next hearing and asked the authorities concerned to submit a report on Russel's treatment expense.

Earlier on 14 May 2018, the High Court issued a rule asking why driver Russel Sarkar should not get Tk 10 million as compensation.

Green Line Paribahan, a bus operating company, was asked to respond to the rule within four weeks.

Russel Sarkar, 23, a private service driver, lost his leg on 28 April after a luxury coach of Green Line Paribahan hit the car he was driving from behind as it stood stationary on the slope of Hanif Flyover in Dholaipar, causing Russel to step out of the car to assess the damage to it.

When he signaled the bus not to drive away, bus driver Kabir Hossain, in an act that has drawn outrage for its sheer idiocy and callous disregard for a fellow human being, instead drove his coach over Russel and fled the scene. Or so he thought.

Being informed, police jumped into action and detained it along with the driver from near the National Press Club.

Russel's left leg was severed from the thigh down in the process of being run over.
