Rangamati AL leader shot dead in polls violence

The president of Bilaichhari upazila Awami League in Rangamati was shot to death by some miscreants at Farua in the upazila on Tuesday morning, reports UNB.

The deceased is Suresh Kanti Tonchangya.

He was killed amid a tense situation over the death of seven people in a gun attack in Rangamati’s Baghaichhari upazila Monday.

Alamgir Kabir, superintendent of Rangamati police said that, when Suresh was returning home by a boat from the upazila headquarters along with his wife and children after the upazila election, a gang of miscreants obstructed his boat and opened fire on him around 8:30am, leaving him dead on the spot.

Angered by murder, Awami League activists are staging demonstrations in the area.

Seven people, including an assistant presiding officer, were killed and a presiding officer among 13 was injured in a gun attack on a vehicle of a motorcade carrying election officials and law enforcers in Baghaichhari upazila on Monday evening.
