11 killed in separate road crashes

Eleven people were killed and dozens injured in separate road accidents in Feni, Mymensingh, Natore and Madaripur districts of the country on Friday.

In Feni, two people including a driver of a pick-up van were killed and a worker was injured when a covered van hit the stationary pick-up van on Dhaka-Chittagong highway in Chhnua area of Feni Sadar upazila on Friday.

The deceased are driver Iqbal Patwary, 30, son of a certain Ahmed Ullah of Paschim Fazilpur area of the upazila and his assistant Mohammad Shamim, 25, son of one Siraj Miah of Senbagh upazila in Noakhali district.

Police said the covered-van hit the stationary pick-up van around 8:30am, leaving the three people injured.

In Mymensingh, four people were killed and 30 others injured as a bus overturned on Mymensingh-Kishoreganj highway on Friday morning.

One of the deceased has so far been identified as Ratan Miah.

The accident took place around 10:30am in Char Rasulpur area of Ishwarganj upazila in Mymensingh district when the bus driver lost control over the steering, leaving a man dead on the spot and 33 people injured, said Ishwarganj police station officer-in-charge Badrul Alam Khan.

Among the injured, two died at Ishwarganj upazila health complex and one breathed his last on the way to Mymensingh Medical College and Hospital.

In Natore, three bikers were killed as a bus knocked down their motorbike in Kachikata area of Gurudaspur upazila in Natore at around 1:00pm.

The bus driver managed to flee the scene after three of the bikers were killed on the spot, said Dilip Kumar Das, the officer-in- charge of Gurudaspur police station.

In Madaripur, two persons were killed and two others injured after a pick-up knocked a rickshaw van near the toll plaza of Seventh China-Bangladesh Friendship Bridge in sadar upazila around 2:30pm.

All the victims were labourers of a brick kiln, said additional superintendent of police in Madaripur Suman Kumar Deb.

The injured were taken to a local hospital, he said.

The driver of the pick-up fled the scene after the accident, he said.
