BNP leader Ruhul Kabir Rizvi on Sunday alleged their leader Tasvir Ul Islam was arrested in connection with the FR Tower fire as the government is trying to shift its blame onto their party for the incident, reports UNB.

"She (prime minister) has taken a strategy to shift blame onto BNP for whatever bad things happen. Tasvir Ul Islam is Kurigram BNP president and our executive committee member. What's the relation between FR Tower fire and him since he is neither the owner of the land nor its developer," he said.

Speaking at a discussion, the BNP senior joint secretary general further said, "The reason behind it is to show people that Bangladesh Nationalist Party is involved in whatever bad thing happens. Tasvir Ul was arrested to shift the blame onto BNP."

Detectives arrested Tasvir Ul Islam, one of the owners of the illegally occupied floors in FR Tower, from his Baridhara home on Saturday night.

Jatiyatabadi Ulema Dal arranged the programme at BNP's Naya Paltan central office in memory of its late president Hafez Abdul Malek and founding general secretary Moazzem Hossain.

Rizvi alleged that prime minister Sheikh Hasina did not take any step to save people, ensure their security and help and rescue people during any disaster. "She only tries to blame BNP for every incident as her party has no public support."

He questioned as to why the government is trying to blame BNP leader Tasvir when he only bought three flats from the developer company Rupayan. "You (PM) are not talking about the building developer Rupayan as its owner is a pro-government businessman."

The BNP leader said Tasvir bought the flats when the building was constructed. "He was arrested and blamed for the incident. But the developer of the building is on the prowl."

He claimed that Banani's Iqbal Tower was constructed violating the building code and the design, but the government will not take any action against its owner since he belongs to the ruling party.

Rizvi alleged that 26 people were killed in the FR Tower fire due to the failure of the government to ensure public security. "We strongly condemn it."

He alleged that the government did not take any step to modernise the Fire Service and Civil Defence with modern life-saving equipment as it has only strengthened the capacity of law enforcers to "suppress the opposition".

"Sheikh Hasina has been in power depending on police, RAB and BGB. She has equipped the law enforcers with guns to shoot BNP leaders and activists, but she didn't take measures to save people's lives," the BNP leader observed.
