The Jahangirnagar University authorities suspended five activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) for mugging on Monday, reports UNB.

They are - Sanjay Ghosh of drama and dramatics, Mohammad Al Razi of government and politics, Raihan Patwary of geological sciences, Mokarram Shiblu of philosophy, and Shah Mostaq Shaikat of computer science.

Three of them were caught red-handed mugging and beating a relative of a JU employee at the botanical garden on the campus on Saturday morning.

Proctor ASM Firoz Ul Hasan said that the decision was taken in the afternoon.

A four-member probe body, headed by professor ATM Atikur Rahman, has been formed to look into the incident and submit a report within seven working days.

Further decisions about the five students will be taken after getting the report.

Razi, Sanjay and Raihan are loyal to BCL JU unit president Jewel Rana, while Shiblu is the cousin of BCL secretary Abu Sufian Chanchal.

Jewel was quick to distance himself from the five. "We won't take responsibility for their anti-social activities. We'll take action against them," he said.

Proctor Firoz said the five students will not be able to attend regular classes and examinations. "They won't be allowed to stay in the residential halls either," he said.
