BNP standing committee member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy said party chairperson Khaleda Zia has failed to groom honest and courageous leaders, which has resulted in the failure to wage any movement to free her from jail.

No one among the leaders close to Khaleda, a former prime minister, gave her honest suggestions, Gayeshwar lamented at the launching ceremony of a book on jailed Khaleda Zia’s political activities on Friday.

“Khaleda Zia failed to groom honest, courageous leaders. That’s why they are afraid of facing the ongoing crisis and the government is taking this chance,” he said.
Gayeshwar’s remarks created mix reaction among the leaders and activists present at the programme.

He told Prothom Alo, “Have I said anything wrong? There are a lot of leaders and activists. But only a handful of them surround her. But there is none among the top leadership to give her honest suggestion. Even I might be one of them.”

"We (top leadership) have our own lackings," he added.

Saying that there is public support for Khaleda Zia, Gayeshwar added that BNP should wage movement using that support.

Gayeshwar also expressed his frustration over the interest shown by some MP-elects of BNP to join the parliament.
