An eighth grader is fighting for her life after she was attacked by a youth who had been stalking her for two years in Kulaura upazila of Moulvibazar on Saturday, reports UNB.

Police and locals named the attacker as Jewel Ahmed, 22, son of Bakul Mia of Sadipur village. He was caught red-handed after the incident at Ghater Bazar.

The victim, a student of Al Hera Cadet School and College, is being treated at Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital.

Her mother said that Jewel had been stalking her daughter since she was a sixth grader at Saptogram High School. When the harassment became too much, her parents informed the local union parishad member and the school authority.

Jewel gave an undertaking that he would stop harassing the girl, said Humayun Kabir, headmaster of the school. But he continued stalking the girl even after she changed school.

On Saturday, the girl was walking home when Jewel attacked her around 2:30pm with a sharp weapon and slashed her indiscriminately.

Locals rushed in hearing her scream and rescued her. They also caught the attacker and handed him over to police.

The victim was initially taken to Kulaura Upazila Health Complex but was later shifted to Osmani hospital after her condition deteriorated.

Kulaura police station's in-charge Eardous Hasan said that a case will be filed.
