Agitating BCL leaders call off protest

The agitating leaders of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) have called off their sit-in strike in front of Raju sculpture hours after meeting with four senior Awami League leaders on Sunday night.

The faction had a meeting with the senior leaders who assured them that actions would soon be taken regarding their demands.

The senior leaders promised them that the ‘deprived’ student leaders who were not accommodated in the newly announced committee, would be taken to meet the prime minister soon. An inquiry would be carried out regarding the attack on the leaders at Madhur canteen. Also, an investigation would be made into the controversial persons who have been given posts in the committee and they would be replaced on the basis of merit from among the 'deprived' leaders.

Eight students, representing the ‘deprived’ faction, went to the PM’s political office at Dhanmondi to meet the four senior leaders - joint general secretaries Jahangir Kabir Nanak and Abdur Rahman, and organising secretaries Bahauddin Nasim and Mozammel Haque.

Following the meeting, Chhatra League's president and general secretary, along with the representatives of the 'deprived' group, went to the Raju sculpture 12:45 in the night. Awami Swechashebok League central president Mollah Md Abu Kawsar also accompanied them.

Chhatra League president Shovon, addressing the 'deprived' faction, said, "Rather than vying for posts, you have to work for the party and the country. Chhatra League is not static, it is a continual process. If you can't be a part of Chhatra League, you will be a part of Jubo League, or Awami league. You must practice politics. This is not how to practice politics. I request everyone to stop this mudslinging. We must not tarnish Chhatra League's reputation. Let us move forward together from tomorrow and work things out in a couple of days."
