The 119th birth anniversary of national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam was celebrated in the country on Friday in a befitting manner.

Different socio-cultural and political organisations arranged elaborate programmes, including discussions and placing of wreaths at his grave by the Central Mosque of Dhaka University, on the occasion, according to UNB.

President Abdul Hamid inaugurated a three-day national programme in Trishal of Mymensingh in the afternoon.

Addressing the inaugural ceremony, he urged the young generation to contribute to building a discrimination-free non-communal society by enriching them through practising Nazrul's works and ideals.

The birth anniversary of the poet was celebrated in Daulatpur of Cumilla and Chattogram with due respect by the local administrations.

Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy arranged a discussion and cultural programme on the occasion while Nazrul Institute held a cultural programme on 27 May on its premises.

Born on 25 May, 1899 at village Churulia in Burdwan district of West Bengal in India, Nazrul through his fiery poems had inspired people to fight against injustice and repression of the colonial rule.
