Road transport and bridges minister Obaidul Quader on Monday said he will talk to the mayors of two Dhaka city corporations after Eid to take steps to combat traffic congestions in the capital, reports UNB.

He came up with his plan while talking to reporters at the secretariat.

The minister said although there is infrastructural development, it will not be possible to control traffic jam unless there is a change in people's mentality.

He also said Eid holidaymakers are enjoying a hassle-free journey this year as all the preparations were taken to this end.

Quader said he takes the issue of bringing discipline on roads as a big challenge.

About charging passengers extra fare by buses for their Eid trip, he said they have urged the bus owners to make sacrifice during Eid as they earn all the year round. "But I'm not sure whether it'll work."

The minister said people want a hassle-free communication system not only during Eid but also throughout the year. "I've been arranging meetings at different departments and offices in this regard."

He said new buses of Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC) have contributed to easing transportation on highways this year.

As various allegations are raised against Himachal Paribahan, Quader said he has instructed the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority to take action against the company.

Shah Fateh Ali Paribahan of Bogura and Hanif Paribahan have been fined for negligence, the minister added.
