A young man accused of raping a seventh grader was killed in what the law enforcers called a gunfight with them at Amirabad of Sitakunda upazila on Thursday.

The deceased is 20-year-old Rana.

A team of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-7) went to arrest Rana from the area on early Thursday acting on a tip-off, said assistant superintendent of police Mashqur Rahman, also media officer of RAB-7.

But the suspect opened fire on the RAB team, triggering a skirmish in which he was killed, reports news agency UNB.

His body has been sent to a local hospital for autopsy.

RAB said they recovered a firearm and 11 bullets from the spot after the ‘gunfight’.

Rana is accused of raping a class-VII student on 3 February. He reportedly lured her to an abandoned house with promises of pickles. A case was filed in this connection.
