Gang-rape accused killed in 'gunfight'

A man was killed in what police called a gunfight in Fishery Ghaat area of Chattogram city early Tuesday.

The law enforcement claimed that the deceased Mohammad Shahabuddin was an accused in a gang-rape case.

Inspector (investigation) Mohammad Kamruzzaman of Kotwali police station told Prothom Alo that a twelfth grader madrasa student was allegedly picked up and gang-raped by some young men on Sunday.

When they again called and asked her for meeting them saying that they had video clips of the rape incident, her family filed the case on Monday, the police official added.

At this, police on Monday night arrested one Shyamol Dey who gave them information on Shahabuddin.

On information, a police team went to Fishery Ghaat to arrest Shahabuddin.

Sensing the presence of the policemen, Shahabuddin and his associates started firing on them, prompting the law enforcers to retaliate, Mohammad Kamruzzaman said.

Shahabuddin was found dead on the spot after his associates fled the scene, the official added.

He also claimed that two policemen were injured in the alleged gunfight.

Prothom Alo, however, could not verify the law enforcement’s version of the incident independently as no version of it was available immediately either from any witness or from any member of the victim’s family.
