Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir expressed deep shock at the death of Jatiya Party chairman and deposed military ruler HM Ershad.

In a condolence message, Fakhrul prayed for the salvation of Ershad's soul and conveyed profound sympathy to his bereaved family members and well-wishers.

Earlier, at a press conference, party senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi declined to give instant reaction to Ershad's death.

"We're now busy with preparations for rallies in Barishal on 18 July and Chattogram on 20 July demanding the release of our chairperson Khaleda Zia. We'll come up with the reaction a few days later," he added.

Ershad, a former military strongman, died in the morning while undergoing treatment at the Combined Military Hospital.

He was 89.

The former president and five-time MP breathed his last at 7:45am.

He will be laid to rest at the Military Graveyard in Banani on Tuesday.
