11 killed as train hits microbus carrying bridal party

As many as 11 people were killed and four others injured as a train smashed a microbus carrying a bridal party at an open level crossing at Panchakohsi in Ullapara upazila of Sirajganj on Monday evening.

The incident took place around 7:00pm on Monday at the level crossing when 14 people of the bridal party were returning home from Gucchagram village of Ullapara upazila to Sadar upazila of the district after a wedding ceremony there.

The deceased are Sirajganj Sadar upazila’s bridegroom Rajan Ahmed, 22, bride Sumaiya Khatun, 21, wife of the bride’s brother Momta Begum, 32, Rajan’s relatives -- Shariful Islam, 36, Abdul Momin, 32, Bhasa, 65, Ahad, 25, Tutul, 20, Khokon Mia, 21 and driver of the microbus Shwadhin Sheikh, 28. Also, a child, whose identity could not be known as yet, was killed in the incident.

Chairman of local Solop union parishad Shawkat Hossain said that Dhaka bound Padma Express train hit the microbus around 7:00pm yesterday (Monday).

The microbus bus was hit at Solop Haatkhola area while it was heading towards from Ullapara to Sadar upazila of Sirajganj district, he added.

Bangladesh Railway’s deputy assistant engineer Ashraful Islam said an investigation committee was formed.

The committee has been asked to submit a report in this regard within seven days, he added.
