Three college students missing in river

Three students of Dhanmondi Ideal College in Dhaka went missing due to strong currents in a tributary of Dhaleshwari river in Bank Colony (West) area of Savar, on the outskirts of the capital on Saturday.

The students are Akash from Bank Colony (West) in Savar, Mehedi from Shaat Feet (60 ft) road area in Agargaon and Rajon from Taltola of Dhaka.

Savar police station officer-in-charge ASM Fayez said 12 students of the eleventh grade at Dhanmondi Ideal College were not allowed to enter the college today, Saturday, as they came late.

One of the friends, Akash, suggest they hang out at an area near his house. Othe than Mokaddem, the rest of them swam bathed in the river for around 45 minutes. But then five of them were caught up in the strong current in the river while six managed to swim ashore around 11:30am, the OC added.

The local people rescued two friends -- Zihadul and Manik, said Mokaddem.

Fire service and civil defence men reached the spot but the rescue work could not start as the divers did not reach there as of 2:00pm, OC ASM Fayez said.
