A college student died of dengue at Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib General Hospital in Sirajganj on Saturday night, reports UNB.

The deceased Mehedi Hasan MimTalukder, 17, is an eleventh grader of Govt Haji Korop Ali Memorial Degree College and son of Aminul Islam MonnuTalukder of Haluakandi village in Kamarkhand upazila.

Faridul Islam, resident medical officer of the hospital, said Mehedi was admitted to the hospital with dengue fever on 14 August and died at 8:00pm on Saturday.

Family members blamed negligence of physicians and nurses of the hospital for Mehedi's death.

At least 1,460 new dengue patients were admitted to different hospitals of the country in 24 hours till Saturday morning.

Of the new dengue infections, 621 were reported in Dhaka city alone while the rest in other divisions, according to the Health Emergency Operation Center and Control Room of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

The number of dengue patients was 1,719 on Friday while 1,929 on Thursdays and 1,880 on Wednesday.

The government has so far confirmed 40 deaths although unofficial estimates suggest the death toll is much higher.

The DGHS said 51,476 people were hospitalised with dengue since January this year. Of them, 43,580 had made full recovery.

Currently, 7,856 patients are undergoing treatment at different hospitals and clinics.
