New dengue infections have shown a marked fall as 1,179 people were infected afresh with the mosquito-borne disease in 24 hours till Saturday morning with the report of one death, reports UNB.

A minor boy died of dengue at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH) on Friday evening.

The deceased is Jarif Mia, son of Arif Mia of Sikarikanda in Sadar upazila of the district.

MMCH deputy director Lakshmi Narayan Majumder said Jarif was undergoing treatment at Gazipur Sadar Hospital after he was diagnosed with dengue.

Physicians there recommended shifting him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital as his condition deteriorated. "But his parents took him to MMCH around 5pm on Friday," Majumder said. "He died within an hour."

Of the new infections, 570 were recorded in Dhaka alone while 609 in other parts of the country.

According to official statics, 62,217 patients infected with dengue were hospitalised and 55,881 of them discharged after treatment since the beginning of this year.

The government has so far confirmed the deaths of 47 people but unofficial estimates suggest a higher death toll.
