Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has increased vigilance in the Bangladesh-India bordering areas of Sylhet to thwart any attempt to enter Bangladesh by the people who were excluded from National Register of Citizens (NRC) in India’s Assam, reports UNB.

BGB Sylhet sector commander colonel AM Khairul said more than 1.9 million people were excluded from the final list of NRC, which the government of Assam, an Indian state published on Saturday.

“For this reason, the vigilance has been increased to prevent entrance through the international bordering areas.”

Locals were also given different awareness directions along with the BGB members in this connection, he said.

BGB members have been kept in alert in the bordering upazilas—Gowainghat, Jakiganj, Beanibazar, Jaintiapur, Companiganj and Kanaighat. BGB found no trace of movement on the other side of the border as of now, the commander said.

Sylhet additional superintendent of police (media) Md Aminul Islam said though it (protecting the border from infiltration) is the duties of the BGB, we have given directions to bordering police stations. Police will stay connected with BGB.

Lieutenant colonel Ahmed Yusuf Jamil, commanding officer of BGB Battalion-48 said, “It is assumed that there will be no impact of NRC in our border but we have increased vigilance in the bordering areas. If India wants to push in, we will guard it.”
