Dengue claims two more lives

Two more people died of dengue in the capital and Jashore while 607 new dengue patients were hospitalised across the country in 24 hours till Saturday morning, reports UNB. 


Rubaiya Akhter, 11, a Class-VI student Wahed Ali High School and daughter of Abdur Rashid of Koyra village in Shibalaya upazila of Manikganj, succumbed to the mosquito-borne disease on Friday night while being shifted to a private hospital in Uttara.

Rubaiya was admitted to Manikganj District Hospital with dengue around 2:00pm on Friday from where she was referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), said superintendent of the hospital Abdul Awal.

She was then taken to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital in the capital.

However, failing to find any seat there, guardians tried to take her to a private hospital in Uttara but she died on the way around 8:30pm, said Yunus Ali, Rubaiya's maternal uncle.

Mohiuddin Ahmed, headmaster of Wahed Ali High School, said Rubaiya was buried at her village following a namaz-e-janaza on the school premises around 10:00am on Saturday.

In Jashore, a man who received treatment at a Dhaka hospital for dengue lost his battle to the mosquito-borne disease at his residence in Chowgachha upazila on Saturday morning.

The deceased was identified Abdul Wadud, 45, a resident of Swarupdah union in the upazila.

Swarupdah union parishad chairman Sheikh Anwar Hossain said Wadud was admitted to Chowgachha Upazila Health Complex with dengue on 24 August when doctors found his platelet level below 26,000 and referred him to Dhaka.

He was then taken to Kurmitola General Hospital in the capital and discharged from the hospital after several days. Then he came back home but fell sick again and was taken to Dhaka for the second time.

As his condition did not improve, he was taken back home where he died around 7:00am today.

Since January, the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) received information about 192 dengue-related deaths. So far, it has reviewed 96 cases and confirmed 57 dengue deaths.

According to Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), 75,753 people were hospitalised with dengue since the beginning of this year. Of them, 72,114 made full recovery.

Of the new dengue patients, 233 were recorded in the capital and 374 outside Dhaka.

Currently, 3,447dengue patients are being treated at hospitals and clinics - 1,719 of them are in Dhaka.
