A person has to pay from Tk 1,000 to Tk 7,000 just to collect the copy of the original land document while the association of the land registrars has to be paid a bribe of Tk 500 to Tk 5000 for every land registration.

Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) on Monday came up with the findings of illegal money transaction in the sector in their research report titled 'Ways to overcome obstacles for good governance in registration and services sector of land documents'.

Speaking at a press conference launching the report at the city's Midas Centre, TIB executive director Iftekharuzzaman said, "Land related services have become synonymous to corruption."

In the report, TIB said there are anomalies at every stage of the land registration process. There is a risk of corruption being institutionalised in the organisation because of this trend, it added.

Iftekharuzzaman also said that there is massive corruption in the recruitment process and promotion procedure in this sector.

He said willingness is needed to stop such rampant corruption in the sector. The situation is getting worse day by day, he observed.

TIB collected information from 41 sub-registrar's office of 16 districts in eight divisions of the country for the report along with Directorate of Registration and the organisations concerned at the national level.

Researcher Nihar Ranjan Ray and Shammi Laila Islam presented the report.
