Additional IGP Shafiqul takes charge as DMP commissioner

Additional inspector general of police (IGP) Mohammad Shafiqul Islam took charge as the 34th commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) on Friday afternoon, according to UNB.

He was replaced by the outgoing commissioner Md Asaduzzaman Mia, said DMP deputy commissioner (public relations) Masudur Rahman.

On 29 August, Public Safety Division of the home ministry issued a notification appointing additional IGP of Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Mohammad Shafiqul Islam as the new commissioner of the DMP.

Shafiqul Islam, who was previously served as the chief of the CID, joined Bangladesh Police as assistant superintendent of police (ASP) in the 8th BCS (Police) cadre in 1989.

During his career, he served as superintendent of police (SP) in Narayanganj district, Patuakhali district, Sunamganj district and Comilla district. He also served as commissioner of Chittagong Metropolitan Police, DIG of Chittagong Range and Dhaka Range, Head of Anti Terrorism (additional IGP) and additional IGP (HRM) of Police headquarters.

He was awarded the BPM ‘padak’ several times for his professionalism and expertise in his career.

Born into a well-respected Muslim family of Alamdanga in Chuadanga district, he obtained his BSc (honours) degree from Bangladesh Agricultural University in 1986.

Outgoing commissioner Md Asaduzzaman Mia has been contractual appointed as the chief executive officer of 'National Security Affair Cell' under the cabinet division for a term of three years.
