JU teachers, students push for VC’s resignation

Students and teachers of Jahangirnagar University brought out a procession on the campus on Thursday demanding resignation of vice-chancellor Farzana Islam over corruption in infrastructural development projects, reports UNB.

The procession started from social science faculty around 1:00pm and ended in front of the administrative building.

Some 100 students and 20 teachers joined the rally.

The protesting teachers on Wednesday demanded VC's resignation by 1 October. They also slapped an embargo on vice-chancellor's entry to all the halls of the upcoming admission tests.

Meanwhile, vice-chancellor said she would not step down in the face of movement.
"I'll resign only when the chancellor asks me to do so."

Rakibul Roni, a member of the JU unit of Chhatra Union, said although BCL activists confessed to taking money for not standing in the way of the development projects, the VC continued to lie over it.

He also said only resignation will not work, but she will have to face trial.

Joynal Abedin Shish, joint convener of the Bangladesh General Students' Rights Protection Council, urged the VC to resin by the deadline, saying she will be forced to step down through a strong movement if she does not go voluntarily.

Mirza Taslima Nasrin, an anthropology teacher, said the Farzana cannot hold such a respectable post after being involved in such a heinous crime.

Former Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) Golam Rabbani claimed that the JU vice-chancellor gave Tk 16 million to JU unit BCL for not standing in the development projects on the campus.

However, JU unit BCL and the VC denied any underhand dealing.
