VC Nasirudin must be removed, demonstrating students demand

Students of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science and Technology University vowed to carry on the protest and hunger strike in demand of the removal of vice chancellor Khondoker Md Nasiruddin.

Starting on Wednesday night, the students continue with the demonstration on Friday.

Despite the university authorities’ acceptance of the students’ 14-point demands, the demonstrators refused to call off the protest until the VC resigns.

The students on Thursday pledged to fast till death, followed with a more vigorous protest participated by almost double the number of students on Friday.

A demonstrating student told Prothom Alo, “The VC contested in the Bangladesh Agricultural University election from the BNP and Jamaat-backed White Panel in 1992. He lost in the election. A BNP man cannot be the VC of a university named after Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. We want the removal of the VC, nothing less than that.”

Incidentally, the VC suspended a second-year law student who was also a university correspondent for Daily Sun, for one of her posts on Facebook which, according to the university authorities, has tarnished the image of the institution on 10 September.

The authorities later on Wednesday withdrew her suspension order in the face of demonstration of the students.

No class or academic examinations were held due to the procession and a significant number of law enforcers were deployed on the campus.

"Regular acitvities and tests will be hampered if the VC is not removed as soon as possible. Our one point-demand is to remove the VC for the sake of peace on the campus," said a demonstrating student.
