Sunamganj boat capsize death toll climbs to 10

The bodies of six more people, who went missing in a boat capsize in Kaliaguta haor in Dirai upazila of Sunamganj on Tuesday, were recovered on Wednesday, raising the death toll to 10.

The deceased were identified as Shanta Moni, 3, Rahitunnesa, 35, Asad, 5, Karima Bibi, 78, and Tasmina, 11. UNB reports that one of the deceased could not be identified.


According to UNB, police quoted witnesses to say that 10 people went missing when a boat carrying 31 people capsized in the Kaliaguta haor amid storm while going to Perua village on Tuesday evening.


Ten people, including six children, went missing after the boat capsized in the water body while 21 managed to swim ashore, the news agency quoted Belayet Hossain, additional superintendent of police as saying.


Police recovered the bodies of four people on Tuesday night. They were Shamim, 2, Abir, 3, of Masimpur village, Azam, 2, of Perua vilalge and Sohan, of Noagram village in the upazila, UNB added.
