2 killed in 'gunfights' in Dhaka, Khulna

Two suspected criminals, including a ‘drug trader’, were killed in separate incidents of ‘gunfights’ with law enforcement in Dhaka and Khulna early Thursday.

In the capital, a ‘criminal’ was killed in a reported gunfight with DB police in the city’s Khilgaon area early Thursday.

The deceased was identified as Towhid.

Tipped off, a team of DB police went to Nagpar Bus Stand area around 1:55 am, said Syed Ruhul Amin, sub-inspector of Khilgaon Police Station.

Sensing the presence of the law enforcement, the criminal opened fire on them, forcing them to fire back in self-defence that left Towhid dead on the spot.

In Khulna, a suspected drug trader was killed in a reported gunfight with members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) at Dhanibunia in Dumuriaupazila early Thursday.

The deceased was identified as Bikash Kumar Dey, son of Biren Dey of Koia Bazar in the upazila. He was wanted in 20 criminal cases.

Tipped off, a team of RAB-6 conducted a drive in the area around 1:00 am, said Major Ashraf, special company commander of RAB-6.

Sensing presence of the elite force, the criminals opened fire on the RAB men, forcing them to fire retaliate.

At one stage, Bikash was caught in the line of fire and suffered bullet injuries while others managed to flee.

Later, he was taken to Dumuria Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared him dead.

Three RAB members were also injured in the gunfight.

The RAB members also recovered two pistols, six bullets, 55 bottles of phensidyl and 200 Yaba tablets from the spot.
