Dengue snatches two lives in Sylhet, Faridpur

Two people, including a madrasa student, died of dengue in Sylhet and Faridpur while 360 people infected with the mosquito-borne disease were hospitalised across the country in 24 hours till Saturday morning, reports UNB.

The deceased are Shahanur Mia, 16, son of Mutalib Mia of Sujanagar village in Dirai municipality of Sunamganj; and Sirajul Islam, 40, son of Felu Sheikh of Narandia village in Saltha upazila of Faridpur.

Sylhet’s Women Medical College director Ferdous said Shahanur was hospitalised on Friday with dengue but the family members took him back from the hospital at night.

Sylhet civil surgeon Himanshu Lal Roy said the family members were taking him to Dhaka for better treatment but he died around Saturday noon.

Kamda Prasad Saha, director of Faridpur Medical College Hospital, said Sirajul was admitted to Shibchar Upazila Hospital on last Sunday with symptoms of dengue.

He was shifted to Faridpur Medical College Hospital a day later.

Sirajul died on early Saturday while undergoing treatment at the hospital, he said.

Ten people died of the mosquito-borne disease at the hospital since the beginning of this year, he added.

Currently 1,709 patients, including 629 in the capital, are being treated at different hospitals across the country.

Bangladesh has experienced a massive dengue outbreak this year. But the situation started improving from the beginning of September with relatively low number of new cases.

Since January, 87,263 people were hospitalised with dengue, most of them in Dhaka. Of them, 85,323 went home after full recovery.

The Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) received reports of 231 dengue-related deaths since the beginning of this year. It has reviewed 136 cases so far and confirmed 81 people had died of dengue.
