Local government, rural development and cooperatives minister Md Tajul Islam has said Padma water treatment plant located in Munshiganj district will supply 450 million litres of pure water daily to the capital city Dhaka.

“The refinery will start supplying of water on test tomorrow … a total of
40 per cent residents of Dhaka will get pure water from the project,” a press release quoted Tajul as saying on Monday.

He said this while visiting the ‘Padma (Josholdia) Water Refinery Project’ located in Medini Mandal Union of Louhajang upazila under Munshiganj district.

The minister also said prime minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the project on 10 October through videoconference, added the release.

Replying to a query, the minister told the journalists that as all the rivers surrounding Dhaka have become polluted in the last 60 years, the project was set up relatively far from the city.

LGRD secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed, managing director of Dhaka WASA Taqsem A Khan, DC of Munshiganj Md Moniruzzaman, police superintendent Mohammad Jayedul Alam, UNO Md Kabirul Islam Khan along with the project manager, country director and chief of construction company accompanied the minister during the visit.
