Jahangirnagar University vice chancellor professor Farzana Islam on Tuesday dubbed the ongoing student movement demanding her ouster as baseless and reiterated that she would not quit, reports news agency UNB.

“The movement demanding of my resignation is baseless, so I will not step down,” professor Islam told a press conference at her office in the afternoon.

She is the first woman to serve as the vice chancellor of a public university in Bangladesh. She was reappointed last year.

Agitating teachers and students, under the banner of ‘Jahangirnagar against Corruption’, formed a human chain at the Central Shaheed Minar premises around 1:00pm, demanding her removal.

Tuesday was the closing day of JU admission test for academic session 2019-20.

The demonstrators also called for strike for the next two days. All administrative activities and classes will remain suspended but examinations will take place as per schedule.

Adib Arif, joint convenor of JU unit Bangladesh Sadharon Chhatra Odhikar Parishad, said there had been media reports about the “corruption of the VC”.

“We’ve demanded judicial inquiry but nothing has been done so far,” he said.
