Abrar murder: Brutality till the end

Two of the students from Sher-e-Bangla Hall of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology and the director of students’ welfare on Wednesday revealed the gruesome story of Abrar’s murder by fellow BUET students, also the leaders of BUET unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League.

The two resident students, Arafat and Mohiuddin, burst into tears while telling the demonstrating students seeking justice for Abrar that how Abrar was left in the stairs to die and the assailants were planning to spread the rumour tagging him an activist of Islami Chhatra Shibir.

But the attempt took a different turn when Abrar succumbed to his injuries.

Students have been demonstrating to press home their 10-point demands including an exemplary punishment of Abrar's murderers.

According to the students of Sher-e-Bangla Hall Abrar was beaten up mercilessly by several BCL leaders in room no. 2011. He was then taken to another room in a severe condition. The assailants at the time tried to tag him as a Shibir member.

Mohiuddin said on microphone that he came out of the room around 2:30am to have snacks and heard Abrar crying. BUET unit BCL leader Meftahul Islam alias Zion still kept saying, “Nothing happened to him. He is just pretending.”

Mohiuddin, at that stage burst into tears and said, “Please forgive me. I could not save him. I couldn’t save his life when he was still breathing.”

Other students were seen sobbing and shedding tears at the time.

Another student Arafat said, he also came out of his room to fetch something to eat. He saw Abrar lying on a mattress. Arafat initially thought he fainted.

“His hands, feet and all body were cold. His clothes were wet. He was foaming at his mouth. I pressed down his breast to make him breathe. I asked fellow students to call the doctor. Doctor said, he breathed his last 15 minutes earlier,” Arafat described.

Arafat, who was sobbing then, told the demonstrating students, “Had I come out three minutes earlier, I would have been able to save his life. I could not sleep for three hours in past three days thinking of the three minutes.”

The director of students’ welfare Mizanur Rahman joined the procession and described that BCL leader Mehedi Hasan alias Russel pressed the hall provost, assistant hall provost and him to take Abrar’s body away immediately.
