Protests resume on BUET campus to meet 5-point demand

Students of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) resumed demonstrations on Saturday with a 5-point demand including issuance of a notice banning organisational student politics on the campus, reports news agency UNB.

The students started demonstrations near the central cafeteria around 11:45am demanding fulfilment of their demands before the university’s admission test scheduled to be held on 14 October.

Their other demands are permanent expulsion of those involved in the murder of Abrar after submission of charge sheet, issuance of official notice on bearing all expenses of Abrar murder case by BUET administration and compensation to his family, sealing off offices of the student wing leaders of political parties, and removal of illegal students from residential halls.

Besides, a common platform to be attached to the BIIS account to expose all incidents of bullying and harassment and bringing all the floors of each dormitory of BUET under 24/7 CCTV monitoring.

Earlier on Friday afternoon, BUET vice chancellor professor Saiful Islam announced banning organisational student politics on campus and suspended 19 accused in Abrar Fahad killing case.

“I’m announcing a ban on all kind of organisational political activities on the campus,” VC said while talking to BUET students over their 10-point demands at the central auditorium.

The students began the demonstrations after Abrar Fahad, 21, a second-year student of Electrical and Electronic Engineering department, was beaten to death early on 7 October reportedly by Bangladesh Chhatra League leaders at BUET’s Sher-e-Bangla Hall.

Abrar’s father Barkatullah filed the case with Chawkbazar police station on the day accusing 19 people. So far, 18 accused have been arrested.
