BNP MP Harun sentenced to five years in jail

A Dhaka court on Monday convicted BNP member of parliament Harun-ur Rashid and two others in a case filed over importing duty-free cars and embezzling money by selling those.
Dhaka’s special judge court-4 judge Sheikh Nazmul Alam handed down the verdict.
Court inspector Ashiqur Rahman confirmed it to Prothom Alo.

He said BNP MP Harun-ur Rashid sentenced to five years in jail and fined Tk 5 million.
Businessman Enayetur Rahman has been sentenced to two years in jail and fined Tk 100,000.
Car importer Ishtiak Sadek has been sentenced to three years in jail and Tk 4 million in fines.
Except Harun-ur Rashid, others are now on the run.

Police inspector Moinul Islam said convicted Harun-ur Rashid has been kept in lockup of the court after the verdict.

Enayetur Rahman’s lawyer Aminul Gani Tito said a case was filed implicating three people including Harun-ur Rashid for importing duty-free cars and embezzling money by selling those while he was MP in 2007.

According to case statements, the case was filed with Tejgaon police station on 17 March 2007.
Sub inspector of police Yunus Ali is the complainant of the case.

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) assistant director, Monayem Hossain, submitted the charge sheet implicating three including BNP MP Harun-ur Rashid on 18 July 2007 after investigating the case.

The court started the trial on 20 August 2007.
