Youth beaten dead on theft charges in Chattogram, SI among 2 detained

A sub-inspector of police and one of his relatives were detained on Tuesday for allegedly beating a youth to death over a theft charge at Bhatiari union in Sitakunda upazila of Chattogram.

The arrestees were identified as SI Iqbal Pervez Raihan of Khagrachhari police station and his brother-in-law Mizanur Rahman, said Noor-e-Alam Mina, superintendent of police of the district.

The deceased is Ezahar Mia, 27, son of Mustafizur of the area.

Victim's relative Mariam Begum said SI Iqbal called Ezahar to his house at Collegepara over phone around 9:30pm on Monday where he, his wife and brother-in-law beat him mercilessly after tying him alleging that he stole their mobile phone, leaving him seriously injured.

They dropped him to his house by an auto-rickshaw around 5am on Tuesday.

Later, the family members started for BSB Hospital but he died on the way, Mariam added.
