A man was killed in what the law enforcers called a gunfight with police in Teknaf's Ukhia early Monday.

The deceased was Md Shamsul alias Burmaiya Shamsu, son of Md Hossain from Hnila union's Paschim Shikderpara village of Teknaf.

Police claimed that he was a drug dealer and appeared on the list of 'drug traders' prepared by the home ministry.

Teknaf police station officer-in-charge, Pradip Kumar, told Prothom Alo that Shamsul was arrested on Sunday night prior to a drive.

Following his information, a police team conducted the drive along with him around 2:00am in Damdamia BGB Checkpost area.

When the team reached there, his associates opened fire on the law enforcers, prompting them to fire back, triggering the gunfight.

The gunfight left Shamsul injured with bullet, said the OC.

Later, the injured was taken to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital where the physicians declared him dead on Monday morning.

The OC also said the police team recovered 20,000 yaba pills, two local firearms and 12 bullets.

The law enforcement’s version of the event was, however, not verified independently as no version of the incident was available immediately either from any witnesses or from any members of the victim's family.
