Former mayor of Dhaka city corporation and BNP vice chairman Sadeque Hossain Khoka is in a critical condition, fighting for life at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in Manhattan, New York.

The physicians at the hospital have given up hope of his condition changing for the better and have stopped treatment.

Despite Khoka’s wishes to spend the last days of his life in his homeland Bangladesh, it has not been possible for his family to bring him back due to passport complications.

Khoka has been staying in New York with his family since 14 May 2014 where he has been undergoing cancer treatment. In 2017 his passport and that of his wife expired, but the consulate in New York is yet to respond to their application to renew their passports.

Sadeque Hossain Khoka’s wife, daughter and two sons are presently with him at the hospital hospital.

Elder son Ishraq Hossain said that his father’s cancer has spread throughout his lungs and he is being kept alive on oxygen.

Khoka was admitted to hospital three weeks ago when his health condition deteriorated and he was taken to ICU on 28 October.

The US BNP unit has arranged a gathering to pray for Khoka’s health.
