Students block road to protect school

Students and guardians of a school on Wednesday blockaded the Chandpur-Cumilla regional highway in a bid to protect the property of Ashikati Government School of Ashikati union under Chandpur Sadar upazila from local grabbers, reports UNB.

Hundreds of vehicles were trapped in the long queue and the passengers faced extreme sufferings due to the blockade using tree logs from 12:00pm to 1.30pm.

Being informed, Chandpur upazila parishad chairman Nurul Islam Nazim Dewan, sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Kaniz Fatema, district assistant primary education officer Farid Uddin Ahmed and OC of Chandpur Model Police Station Md Nasim Uddin rushed to the spot and talked to the teachers and guardians to resolve the issue.

On assurance from the authority to resolve the issue on Thursday, the students lifted the blockade. Later, police and local people removed the tree log and traffic movement resumed on the route.
“I have applied to the concerned offices including the deputy commissioner as the school’s property was not included in ‘BS Khatian’ and a case is running at the Chandpur Land Survey Tribunal to resolve the matter,” said headmaster of the school Lutfa Begum.
“Despite that, members of an organised land grabbers’ group obstruct us whenever we try to start any development work for the school,” she added.
